Personal Training: Always a Trend By: Carley Heimbecker
Fashion trends come and go and even fitness trends change on a regular basis but personal training is a trend that is here to stay. The idea of personalized training is over 100 years old and is a trend that won’t go away. The main reason throughout all the years is that people will always want to lose weight and be healthy. People like to eat what they want and not gain weight from it. So they figure that the solution to this problem is to work off all the food they just ate; and what better way to do this than having someone help you with it. Also the person that will help you with it has knowledge that will help you get your desired results. For example personal trainers are educated on up-to –the-minute work out strategies that will help you maintain lasting results. Personal trainers are also not interested in putting you through a workout, which means it must be difficult. Instead with a personal trainer you are training and this involves planning, progression, analysis, and working to improve physical properties. Also the personal trainer will provide nutritional information so it is easier to maintain the healthy weight you accomplished.
Another reason why personal trainers are not going anywhere is the hard working and unique environment that is provided in the facility. When you are at a place where you just work out you can sometimes feel the temptation to just stop because you are sore, tired, or even both. At a personal trainer’s facility that is not a possibility. They will push you until you reach that goal you have set for yourself. They help you do your best and work your hardest by adding weight or even just giving it that last push to do one more push up. This helps athletes and anybody else who goes there realize their true potential and helps people strive for their personal goals. Like a healthy lifestyle, strong physique and to be the best they can be. The attention to detail also gives the people who go to a personal trainer the comfort to do their best and to help people feel even more comfortable there might be choices from one on one training, team training, group training, and public training. The comfort, quality, and motivational environment gives people that push to strive for what they truly want.
On top of that the high quality training that occurs in the facility keeps people coming back for more. The training you do is made just for you. It is made according to your age, individual needs, and sport requirements. The trainers will put you through testing to find out what you need to work on and then they will put together your training according to your results. The training sheet that the trainer puts together will use a variety of muscles and it will usually rotate from upper body strength to lower body strength so that the other muscles can rest for a little bit. For example you might do some leg work(front squats) then some arm work(chin ups) and after that there would be a 90 second break until you do it all again. Although sometimes for the last conditioning part it could be all one muscle group so that it is worked so that it will be really sore the next day. As you improve while being with the personal trainer your training will modify so that it will always be challenging. Every training will start with a good warm up that might not include stretching because that relaxes the muscles rather than gets the muscles ready to work. After all of the training will be a good conditioning to get you to give it your all for the last bit while you are tired. Then you will stretch to reduce the muscle tightness and soreness you feel or will feel the next day. The challenging training that keeps people fit, healthy, and ready to go makes people want more of it.
Lastly personal trainers choose to specialize in specific types of training and it can encourage people to go to that specific personal trainer. For example some personal trainers specialize in athletic training. This means that the training will be more specialized toward athletes getting stronger and more conditioned. There can also be trainers that specialize in function training for people that have had injuries. This will be a little less intense and be working more on the movement and strength of the injured area. Another type of training is adult training for the adults that want to get in shape and be fit. This will be intense and focus more on the basics of being fit rather than going through the lengths of an athlete.
As a result the need for personal trainers won’t be going anywhere anytime soon because it targets a variety of people according to what their goals are. People will always want to be healthy and personal training is the favorable way to achieve this.
Some examples of personal training facilities are:
Rugby By: Sam Tonner, Natasha Krsteva and Emily MacMillan
Women’s and men's rugby is identical because they have the same rules and same equipment and is also a full contact sport. The game is very competitive and really focuses on self-image to ensure the position of players. Rugby has begun to become more popular for females in the last 30 years.
The game originated in England in the early 19th century . The earliest record of a female playing rugby has been in Portora Royal School in Enniskillen, Ireland. Emily Valentine’s brothers were responsible for the first rugby team in 1884 and she played with the team in 1887, and scored a try.Women’s International Rugby began in 1882 between france and Netherlands played in Utrecht. The game is played by running with an oval shaped ball in your hand with a maximum length and width of 30 centimetres and 62 centimetres. It is played on a field up to 100 metres long and 20 metres wide with H-shaped goal posts on each end of the field for a goal line.
The first rugby international took place on March 27, 1871, played between England and Scotland. By 1881 both Ireland and Wales had representative teams, and in 1883 the first International competition, the Home Nations Championship had begun.
International Rugby Board has been the leading union for rugby since it formed in 1886. Rugby started in Great Britain and Ireland then grew to Australia, New Zealand, Africa etc. Some countries like Fiji, Georgia, New Zealand, and South Africa have adopted Rugby as their national sport. Rugby Unions has now been played in over 100 countries across six continents. Rugby was included as an event in the Olympic Games four times during the 1900’s. In 1987 the first rugby world cup was held in New Zealand and Australia with New Zealand as the winner.
Are sports no longer competetive? By: Maddie Bailey
Sports these days are no longer competitive because people encourage having fun, it doesn’t matter who wins or loses. In my opinion that is ruining sports, that competitive attitude provides motivation for players. Ringette, Hockey, softball, competitive is what sports are, it’s what they are built on, without that edge, these sports turn into chess. A non-competitive “activity”, I love competitive sports, they help you to understand the real world, in this world it’s competitive, for jobs, for house buying and a whole bunch of other things. But when we teach kids to take away that edge they aren’t prepared for anything that involves competitiveness. Sometimes it’s a hard concept to understand, don't get me wrong I'm all for having fun but sometimes I like to be competetive, it makes it a better game. When its competive more people try and give their all. But that's just my opinion!
Trends in Golf
By: Brad Golding
Golf is a very popular sport for recreation and professional play around the world. Due to its increasing popularity, trends are beginning to emerge within several aspects of the game. A few of the aspects of the game that hold trends are: Apparell, club types, course designs and even swing styles.
Professional golfers hold huge influence on recreational golfers in terms of trends. That’s true for most sports, however, which is why companies pay big money for players to wear their brands because it entices the recreational golfers to adopt similar trends. The trends in golf change often, depending on which players are playing well or have won recent tournaments. For example, Rickie Fowler took the golf world by storm when he first hit the fairways of the PGA tour a few years ago. A young, jubilant, great player that caught the eye of the media and recreational golfers (especially kids). Now, he is a well known figure in golf with his “trademark” orange outfit and puma hat. Many other PGA tour players have also been known to change the face of golf and form new trends within the sport.
Trends in golf apparel have developed over the years from a variety of different styles. For example golf in the early 1900’s was very traditional. Men wore knickers with patterned socks, flat caps and slicked back hair. The trends in golf apparel today have advanced a long way since the early 1900’s! “The Rickie Fowler look” is a re-occurring trend that will last for a long time. Another trendy brand right now is Loudmouth Golf. Loudmouth Golf is a company that makes all types of apparel but are known for their wild styles of pants. Possibly spurred by the influence of Loudmouth Golf, players are wearing vibrant colours (pink, purple, lime green etc.). As different players enter the PGA tour and begin winning tournaments the trends in apparel which change.
Trends in golf clubs throughout the century have also changed drastically. In the early 1900’s the Calamity Jane putter, the longnose driver and “spoon” wedges were extremely popular club makes at the time. Nowadays, Taylormade is dominating the golf industry in every category of club (driver, irons, putter, wedges, etc.). Every 6 months - 1 year Taylormade comes out with a new “line” of clubs. For example, the last 5 models have been: Burner, R11, Burner 2.0, R11s and the most recent RocketBallz. A huge amount of PGA tour players are sponsored by Taylormade including: Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Jason Day, Justin Rose, Mike Weir etc. Having big name sponsors on the PGA tour is huge for enticing recreational golfers to buy Taylormade equipment and adopt their trends. Another feature of Taylormade clubs that make them trendy are their looks and features. Each time Taylormade comes out with a new “line” of clubs they have unique new features and designs. For example the Rocketballz line has a unique white head with a small Rocketballz logo on it. The new feature of this club is an empty cavity behind the clubface, supposedly creating more cushion, allowing the user to hit the ball farther than normal.
Trends in course design have changed tremendously as well. In the early 1900’s courses tended to be designed with lots of trees, few bunkers and around 6000 yards in length. The trend today in course design is “links style”, meaning it has very few trees and a large amount of bunkers. To accommodate the increasing technology in hitting abilities for clubs, golf courses have to be built longer. Golf courses today are typically built to be anywhere from 7000-7500 yards, which is a massive difference from the early 1900’s. Old courses have also been modified to accommodate the increasing technology in clubs. This means adding more bunkers, making the greens tougher, the fairways more tight and of course making the course longer.
Swing styles on the golf course have gone through different trends over the past century as well. In the early 1900’s golfers used hickory shafted golf clubs making their swings a lot different than a swing with steel shafted clubs. The current trend in golf swings vary. Many factors are put into play when determining a swing style for an individual. These factors include: age, club type (graphite, steel), club flex (regular, stiff, senior, women, etc.), swing speed, etc. The current type of swing that is trendy in golf is the “stack n’ tilt” swing. It was taught to Tiger Woods by his swing coach Sean Foley after he needed a fresh start after his ordeal in the past few years. Since Tiger Woods is still one of the most popular golfers, his new swing is attempted and used by many golfers looking for a similar “fresh start” to their game.
Golf is a sport where trends are very prevalent. Trends are typically started by PGA tour players who are popular, and continued by recreational golfers who are intrigued by these trends. I, personally follow many of the trends that occur in golf today. The players we look up to on the PGA tour are changing the face of the game, 1 trend at a time.
Skipping breakfast and starving yourself to lose weight
By Brandan Nankoo
When your mom told you to eat breakfast that it’s the most important part of your day you should listen to them. If you don’t eat within the first hour of waking up you will start to slow down your metabolism. Eating a healthy breakfast will kick start your metabolism and you will burn more calories in your day. When people think that skipping breakfast and skipping the early morning calories will make you lose weight but you’re wrong, skipping breakfast actually does the opposite.
The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to speed up your metabolism. The word metabolism is one of the most misunderstood words related to training. People say all the time that their slow metabolism is to blame for their less-than-stellar results. Sadly, this myth is being perpetuated by the weight loss industry.
Not only is the term metabolism misused, but it's being manipulated by the weight loss industry to sell products. I have to say that I'm not bashing fat burners; in fact I use them myself. But they're intended to assist people who exercise regularly and rigorously, use fat for energy during exercise instead of sugar stores or worse, muscle tissue.
When people take pills to amp up their metabolism without hitting it hard in the gym, they're effectively abusing such pills and are putting their health at serious risk First of all overweight people actually have faster metabolisms than thin people because they are literally carrying around extra weight.
For example, a 130 pound, 30 year-old woman who is 5'5" tall has a BMR of 1384. The same woman at 230 pounds has a BMR of 1817. And the 230 pound woman burns more calories doing while exercising as well. So actually, thin people aren't "lucky" to be born with fast metabolisms. Their metabolisms are slower than overweight people.
Second, genes do play a role in metabolism, but I wouldn't go as far as to use the word "lucky" in describing those with faster metabolisms. Differences in metabolic rates are smaller than we think. Furthermore, people who have faster metabolisms are probably already doing things to speed it up. Again, luck really doesn't have anything to do with it.
The main point: we don't have to be victims of our "slow" metabolisms. There are several things you can do to easily reach the maximum potential of your metabolism.
Some ways you can speed up your metabolism is to eat 5-6 small meals a day. This technique works on another level. When your body doesn't get food, your metabolism slows down. This is because our bodies are ingeniously programmed to protect against starvation when your body senses that another meal may not be coming it holds onto your body fat to use as energy.
When you only eat three times a day, your metabolism slows greatly between each meal. On the other hand, by eating consistently every three to four hours, your metabolism will stay elevated, knowing that another meal is coming soon.
Another way to boost your metabolism is to do high intensity training. High intensity training will help you burn more energy (fat) which will boost your metabolism because your body will so strained after it, so your body needs more time to recover.
